Holding Pattern

There are many great tragedies. They take many forms, and you can point them out because some of them are epic and therefore very obvious. So many of them are spoken words, with consequences. These are the words that shape things, because the pen is mightier than the sword. But there is a secret. It is held deeply, so therefore it isn’t as exposed. And that secret is in the silences. Because more so than the harmful words spoken are those words not spoken.
This may seem, on the surface, as mundane like an improperly placed ‘thank you’. And that is true, because you can never have enough thank you’s and a ‘thank you’ is never too late. But what we are dealing with in these coming sentences are not formalities. They are silent truths that are bigger than the proper text of passing along as a decent human being.
Those who are fatalists point out that things left undone never really existed because fate carved out the path that was to be true. And there is truth in this. But also there is tremendous truth in what was left behind. And this is the story that never gets told so it becomes forgotten because it was never remembered in the first place. I expose this story here.
In this place talent shines unknowingly but with wicked consequences. There are many talented people who are talented because of their silences—because they don’t speak the truth, and they are comfortable being held back, because they identify with the inertia and the inability to make decisions. They are ubiquitous meaning you probably brushed pass one today out and about. Today it becomes even more common to hold such a talent. And everybody else sees and sometimes acknowledges the silences and understands, at least for a fleeting moment before something else grabs their attention and they are sucked away in the Next Thing which is such as life operates today in the ADD world of attention grabbing.
Not everybody is as distracted by the Next Thing though. Women bear the torch for this the most (and the longest). This is because women have the instinct and the capacity to see and feel the most. But here is the worst secret of them all: they are also conditioned to suffer so they carry it. They are conditioned in the land of Disney movies, that tells them to wait, and wait, and wait, just like Sleeping Beauty and Snow White slept for a very long time waiting on somebody else to come along and make them feel alive. So they hold back on what they feel. They learn to become okay with marginal and not enough. They learn to strive: strive for the next fashion trend, for the target weight, the thing that means they are not whole but will be once they obtain it. Worse, women see but they resign themselves to a prison known as “good enough later on” meaning they nurture themselves and become complacent waiting on the _____ thing (in many cases a man) to wake up and see how great they really are. And sometimes they land such a man and are even mistreated and they continue to wait for improvement thinking they can give enough love to make things better in the meantime. Their life is always put for another time and not now. And in this complacency the planet gets robbed.
But who out of these parties are the real perpetrators? The victim of such or those who commit such blind acts? It takes two to tango. And these women are tangoing and don’t realize it. And many of them carry habits from the dance into their life that effects the next thing and distorts the reality of what is really happening because without even realizing it they are just so exhausted and dizzy trying to fulfill this objective that was actually given to them without permission and it creates a void that means they are out of touch completely with what should be really happening and on and on and on…
Here we have What Is: a holding pattern. A sun rises, and it sets, again and again and again and people are not exerting their energy into the full investment of who they are but who they are holding out to be once the _____ comes to fruition. They are packing their suitcase for a place that hasn’t been visited yet or more importantly even understood. It is living in a second nature that isn’t natural at all but accepted as such.
In this we have Life. A story. A story that is seemingly sweet but not completely honest. With this comes all those silences that are representative of things lost, of things that could make the stories very different if spoken, of opportunities that would happen if even just a shred of focus was changed into a different direction; not a direction of waiting but one of value where a person says ‘this isn’t right’ and they choose to do different because they take a stand where one wasn’t taken. Where taking a stand makes all the difference in the world because in not holding back there is opportunity that gets born. In this place is where the best things happen. Because they are not based on a spirit of hold back but on a spirit of trust. A trust in what is right (yet unknown). A trust in what is best (yet unknown). And sometimes what is held in a person’s mind isn’t what initially happens when trusting this unknown. But that doesn’t mean that things are bad. It just means truth gets revealed. And this is scary since it isn’t a comfortable complacency of waiting, of being held back, but giving faith to the unknown is really the only way to see what’s on the other side of the always unwritten future.
