Safety

Have you ever encountered a danger and had to flee for your life?  It’s a strange feeling because your basic instincts kick into play.

If you are fleeing in a home a common room of refuge is a bathroom.  Since when you were a kid your learn that a bathroom is a place of peace albeit briefly.  For a time at least.  If you are fleeing for your life the toilet is your friend. But not ON the toilet.  Behind the toilet.  You don’t gravitate towards the sink or even the washer or dryer if they have any presence but the toilet.  That’s your instinct.  Ironically the toilet does little for protection.  It’s small, and shatters easily.  You have to really curl yourself into a tight ball to huddle behind it.  But that is where your instinct will tell you to go.

When the person you are running from is a person that you love you may on a basic level be scared but on a deep level be shocked and confused as this feeling of a need for safety and shelter from harm contradicts your love for that person. Some people, like Oscar Pistorius, will chase their girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp into a bathroom and kill her in cold blood while she huddles behind the toilet for safety.  And you will know exactly how Reeva feels as you have been there with all the love and hope in your heart only to find yourself one night on your knees seeking safety behind a toilet.  In Reeva’s case it ends in death. In your own case you survive.  So what are you to do with this?? In secret you want to rise above and live on behalf of Reeva.  Yet you have a shroud on your heart.

This is where everything counts.
